Lent

(Image: Tumblr)

Today is Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of Lent, the time of year when we try to give up one of our vices until Easter Sunday. I don't normally do this because I'm not religious, but some years I fancy setting myself the challenge for personal reasons rather than religious ones. So this year I have decided to give up sweet things like cake, chocolate etc. I have a ridiculously sweet tooth which means that if I am going to eat unhealthy food, I will always reach for a chocolate bar over fish and chips, but if we're being honest, neither is that great to eat on a regular basis. Hopefully if I post my Lent challenge on here it'll feel more like a promise I have to keep so I might be more likely to stick to it! I expect I'm going to find this pretty tough because I believe that an afternoon is always made better with a biscuit but it's something I think will be good for me to do and hopefully, fingers crossed, my cravings for sugary food will subside over time. I had pancakes with Nutella last night for Shrove Tuesday as my last supper and emotional farewell to sugar which I'm sure Jesus would've done had there been Nutella back then. I'm going to try to eat more fruit during these next few weeks as well (even though I eat a lot already) because fruit obviously contains natural sugars which can be a healthy substitute for the rubbishy sugar in chocolate. Wish me luck!

Are you giving up anything for Lent?

  1. Well done! Good luck! I'm the same, I do it for personal reasons rather than religious reasons! It's nice to exercise some self control!

    1. Thank you! Exactly, Lent gives me a good excuse to exercise some self control which, if I'm being honest, I wouldn't do in the rest of the year!

  6. I'm doing the same thing! I'm also trying to go to church every Sunday, as well as make it to the gym three times a week. We'll see how that works out, haha...
